Hash Algorithm Information
MD5
128-bit hash, 32 characters. Widely used for checksums, but no longer secure for cryptographic purposes.
SHA-1
160-bit hash, 40 characters. Widely used in legacy systems, but considered weak for security purposes.
SHA-256
256-bit hash, 64 characters. Part of the SHA-2 family. Suitable for modern integrity checks.
SHA-512
512-bit hash, 128 characters. Part of the SHA-2 family. A strong choice for fingerprinting and integrity.
How to generate a hash
Step 1
Choose input type
Enter text, upload a file, or open Compare mode to check two values.
Step 2
Select algorithms
Pick MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2 or SHA-3 digests. MD5 and SHA-1 are labeled as legacy options.
Step 3
Review results
Hashes update as you type (with debounce). Each card shows the hex digest, length and input type.
Step 4
Copy or download
Copy one hash, copy all, or download TXT, JSON or CSV of the current results.
Real cryptographic hashes — computed locally
OneFileKit hashes your text and files in the browser with maintained cryptographic libraries. Exact UTF-8 bytes are hashed for text (whitespace and newlines are preserved). Files are hashed from their raw bytes, with streaming for larger uploads.
MD5 and SHA-1 are offered for compatibility and checksum workflows only. They are not recommended for password storage or modern cryptographic security. Prefer SHA-256, SHA-512 or SHA-3 for integrity checks.
Optional server endpoints exist for text hashing and comparison, but the page hashes locally by default so your content does not need to leave the device.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my text or file uploaded?
- No. Hashing on this page runs locally in your browser. Your data is not uploaded for normal text or file hashing.
- Are MD5 and SHA-1 secure?
- No. MD5 and SHA-1 are legacy algorithms. They remain useful for checksums and compatibility, but they are not recommended for security-sensitive purposes such as password storage or modern signatures.
- How large a file can I hash?
- The tool accepts files up to the configured maximum (100 MB by default). Larger files are hashed with streaming so the entire file does not need to sit in memory at once.
- What does Compare mode do?
- Compare mode hashes two text inputs with the same algorithm (or compares two hex digests) and shows Match or Do Not Match. Comparison is case-insensitive for hex digests.
